Captain Moroni
(Pronounced More-own-eye)

A Great Nephite commander. He created the Title of liberty, fortified the Nephite cities, defeated the armies of Zerahemna, stopped the treachery of the King-men, rescued the Nephite prisoners without bloodshed, and invented many new military strategies.

He led other great captains such as Teancum, Helaman and Lehi with whom he had a dear friendship (Alma 53:2). He retired about 60 B.C. and turned over the Chief Captainship to his son Moronihah. He passed away in 56 B.C.

Mormon wrote this stunning praise for Chief Captain Moroni: "Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men." - Alma 48:17
